The national electricity grid has collapsed once more, plunging the country into darkness.
The grid failure occurred at around 6:18 pm on Monday, causing a sharp drop in power generation from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 pm to 3.56GW at 6 pm, and eventually down to 0.00GW by 7 pm and 8 pm.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid collapse in an official statement, reporting that the outage occurred at 18:48 hours on October 14, 2024. The statement attributed the loss of supply across the EEDC network to this general system collapse.
“Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are currently out of supply, preventing us from providing services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States,” said Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications for EEDC. “We are awaiting further details from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo regarding the cause and restoration efforts.”
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Disco) also informed customers of the situation, stating, “The power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today, affecting supply across our franchise areas. We are collaborating with stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.”
Efforts to address the collapse are ongoing, and updates are expected as the situation develops.
