Governor Seyi Makinde has affirmed that those implicated in the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children, will face trial, regardless of their status.
Addressing the 2025 Annual Inter-Faith Service for state workers on Monday, the governor rejected calls for leniency, emphasizing that Oyo State will adhere to the rule of law.
Makinde acknowledged comparisons to similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where no prosecutions occurred, but maintained that Oyo State would set a different precedent.
“Even if no one is held accountable elsewhere, the rule of law will prevail in Oyo State,” Makinde declared. He clarified that while he does not oppose bail for suspects, the judicial process must run its course to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.
The inter-faith gathering, attended by labor leaders, state workers, and community figures, served as a platform for the governor to reiterate his administration’s commitment to justice and good governance.
Reflecting on recent challenges, including the January 2024 Bodija explosion and the Bashorun stampede, Makinde expressed hope that such tragedies would never recur. He stressed that no matter how highly placed, those responsible would face justice.
Makinde also addressed renewed security threats from bandits infiltrating Oyo State from northwestern regions. He assured residents of intensified efforts to combat insecurity, acknowledging the work of security operatives and urging local leaders to remain vigilant.
“Insecurity undermines all progress,” Makinde said. “We will not rest until Oyo State is completely free of bandits and other criminal elements.”
He also shared updates on the ongoing review of pensioners’ remuneration following the new minimum wage, promising to finalize discussions and announce adjustments soon.
During her welcome address, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, lauded Makinde’s worker-friendly policies, urging employees to remain committed to their duties.
In their remarks, Oyo State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker, Abiodun Fadeyi; Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins; and Trade Union Congress leader, Comrade Bosun Olabiyi, commended the governor’s efforts in improving workers’ welfare and called for sustained momentum.
