The Kaduna State Government has reported a significant improvement in student performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Over 67% of students achieved five credits or more in the 2024 WASSCE, a sharp increase from the 54% recorded in the previous year.

Prof. Muhammad Sani Bello, the State’s Commissioner of Education, shared the news during a one-day summit organized by the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority. The summit, themed “Quality Assurance in Education: A Summit for Best Practices,” was focused on improving education standards across the state.

According to Bello, this improvement is a reflection of Governor Uba Sani’s administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education through stronger quality assurance mechanisms and improved learning outcomes. He highlighted the state’s dedication to not only increasing access to education but also ensuring that students graduate with excellent academic results.

“Kaduna is committed to not only increasing access to education but ensuring that students are graduating with excellent outcomes. We have already seen a significant rise in learning outcomes, and we believe that this upward trend will continue,” Bello stated.

The commissioner expressed optimism that Kaduna’s educational system would soon be recognized as the top in Nigeria in terms of education delivery. He also called on other educational agencies to adopt the same quality standards set by the Quality Assurance Authority.

Prof. Usman Zaria, Director General of the Quality Assurance Authority, further elaborated on the steps taken to boost education standards in both public and private schools. He mentioned the introduction of fortified certificates with QR codes to prevent fraud and the implementation of new technology, such as computer systems, to enhance learning experiences.

Zaria acknowledged that while insecurity had previously hindered school enrolment, recent improvements in the state’s security situation had led to a rise in primary school enrolment, which increased from 1.7 million last year to almost 1.8 million this year.

He added that Kaduna’s national ranking in WASSCE results has improved, moving from 10th to 7th position.
