The Kano Independent Electoral Commission has awarded certificates of return to the 44 newly elected Local Government Chairmen in the state.
On Sunday, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, the commission’s Chairman, presented the certificates, fulfilling the commission’s mandate as required by the electoral process. He encouraged the newly elected LG chairmen and councillors to commit to their responsibilities diligently.
“As part of our electoral duties, the commission is authorized to issue certificates of return to the elected leaders, officially recognizing them as the heads of their respective local governments,” Malumfashi said during the event.
Reports indicate that the state governor, Abba Yusuf, will soon officiate the swearing-in ceremony at the Government House in Kano.
In the recent local government elections, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) claimed victory in all 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions. According to Malumfashi, six political parties participated, including AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP, with the latter emerging as the victor in all contested seats.
Governor Yusuf, on October 25, confirmed that the October 26 election would proceed as scheduled, stating, “We are fully prepared and have met all legal requirements for this election. Efforts to disrupt the peace in Kano will not succeed.”
This comes despite a recent Federal High Court ruling that disqualified the commission’s chairman over allegations of political affiliation.
