The Kebbi State Government has decided to close the College of Health Technology in Jega after students staged a protest.
Isah Abubakar-Tunga, the state’s Commissioner for Higher Education, announced the closure in a statement released in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday. He expressed concerns that allowing the demonstration to continue could lead to uncontrollable violence.
Abubakar-Tunga urged all students to leave the campus immediately, stating, “The students targeted the provost, setting fire to his house and completely vandalizing his vehicle. When we visited the college, we found only the Registrar on site. The provost had to be taken to the police station for his safety due to the threats against him.”
He explained that the students were upset because the courses offered by the college were recognized only by the state and not at the federal level, which means graduates would receive ordinary diplomas instead of national diploma certificates.
The commissioner also highlighted other grievances from the students, including the lack of toilets, insufficient access to clean water, poor sanitary conditions, and ineffective leadership.
The college will remain closed for a period of three weeks to one month. Upon reopening, every student will be required to return with a parent and sign an undertaking.
