Kemi Badenoch, the former Business Secretary, has been elected as the new leader of the UK Conservative Party, triumphing over Robert Jenrick in the final leadership vote. Badenoch makes history as the first Black woman to head a major political party in the UK and steps into her new role following the party’s significant electoral defeat.

Replacing Rishi Sunak, Badenoch secured 53,806 votes against Jenrick’s 41,388, with the results confirmed on Saturday morning. Throughout her campaign, she emphasized a commitment to the party’s “first principles” and outlined plans for policy reviews aimed at developing a fresh political agenda.

Representing North West Essex, Badenoch becomes the sixth Conservative leader in just over eight years, facing the pressing task of bringing unity to a divided party.

Addressing supporters after the announcement, she stated, “The time has come to tell the truth. It’s time to get down to business and begin the work of renewal.”

Badenoch’s firm stance on reducing government reach and her critical views on identity politics have solidified her support among Conservatives who see a rightward shift as essential to regaining public trust. Known for her direct approach, she has built a loyal base even as her past confrontations with media and government figures have stirred controversy.

Reflecting on her victory, Badenoch expressed her goals for the party, saying, “Our foremost duty as His Majesty’s opposition is to hold the Labour government accountable. Equally vital is preparing ourselves for leadership in the coming years.”
