The Lagos State House of Assembly has introduced stricter security protocols, requiring staff and legislative aides to present valid identity cards to access the premises. This move comes amidst ongoing controversies surrounding the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
When our correspondent visited the Assembly complex on Monday, the environment was calm as preparations for the day’s plenary session were underway. A staff notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi, on behalf of the Acting Clerk of the House, Taiwo Ottun, emphasized the new security directive.
“Based on management’s directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to gain access to the premises. Entry will be denied to anyone without proper identification,” the notice stated.
Additionally, the Lagos State Police Command has assured that it will maintain order and stability in the state, regardless of developments within the Assembly.
The tightened security measures follow two days after Obasa publicly declared that he remained the Speaker until due process was followed. Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, by a majority of House members over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was subsequently elected to replace him.
Monday’s plenary session marks the third presided over by Speaker Meranda since Obasa’s impeachment. The former Speaker has been absent from the last two sittings.
The Lagos Assembly continues to navigate the fallout from Obasa’s removal, with members expected to address key legislative matters during the session.
