Lakurawa Militant Group Escalates Violence in Niger Republic, Sparks Cross-Border Tensions with Nigeria
Suspected members of the Lakurawa militant group have launched a series of violent attacks in Niger Republic’s Dosso region, heightening tensions along the border shared with Nigeria.
The most recent attack occurred in Gueza, a village in the Dioundiou department, where militants reportedly strangled five villagers to death. Shortly after, the attackers returned, killing a local father and the village chief’s representative in a retaliatory strike believed to stem from a personal grudge.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, known for his insights on Lake Chad conflicts, linked the violence to a local dispute involving a woman pursued by a Lakurawa leader. After the village chief’s representative intervened and advised the woman’s father to relocate her for safety, the militants retaliated with deadly consequences.
These incidents mark an escalation in the activities of the Lakurawa group, raising concerns over security in the already volatile border region and straining relations between Niger and Nigeria.
