The Lagos State Safety Commission has called on sand miners and dredgers across the state to prioritize safety at dredging locations and mining sites.
Director-General of the Lagos Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, emphasized this need during a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday, where he reminded industry players that the preservation of lives and property is crucial and a core focus of the commission.
“Some individuals have suffered injuries, while others have tragically lost their lives due to unsafe practices at various sites,” Mojola stated. “We’re gathered here to discuss responsible conduct and explore ways to improve safety standards.”
Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Shomilewo Okikiola reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safe, resilient, and sustainable mining operations.
“Safety guidelines from the Lagos State Safety Commission are non-negotiable,” Okikiola noted. “They’re essential to protecting lives at dredging and mining sites.”
Dr. Tarzan Balogun, President of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transportation in Nigeria, also advocated for a safety boat to monitor site operations, urging the commission to support such safety measures.
