The late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, was laid to rest in Abuja on Friday, with tributes pouring in from across the nation. During the burial ceremony, President Bola Tinubu posthumously conferred on him the national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).

In his eulogy, President Tinubu praised the late COAS for his exceptional leadership, dedication to duty, and commitment to the welfare of his troops and their families.

“Lieutenant Lagbaja had a clear understanding of the military’s role in securing and defending our country and its people,” the President said. “He displayed uncommon valor in the discharge of his duties and cared deeply about the welfare of the rank and file as well as their families.

“I recall the passion with which he championed the payment of outstanding group life assurance benefits to the families of fallen soldiers. His tenure, though brief, marked a transformative period in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency. He embodied visionary military leadership, and his passing marks the end of an era defined by exceptional service.”

President Tinubu emphasized that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s legacy of dedication and sacrifice will be remembered as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s military history.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja served as the Chief of Army Staff from June 2023 until his passing on November 5, 2024, a tenure spanning one year and four months. Under his leadership, the Nigerian Army made significant strides in counterinsurgency operations and reforms within the military.

The burial ceremony was attended by dignitaries, military officials, and family members, all of whom lauded his selfless service and contributions to the nation’s security. His legacy, they noted, would remain an inspiration to future generations.
