Reported by CBS NEWS- Authorities are intensifying their search for clues in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with efforts focused on Central Park and extending to interstate bus stations.
Central Park Search for Weapon
Dive teams from the NYPD have been scouring the waters near Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain, cordoning off the area behind the landmark as they look for the weapon used in the crime. Police believe recovering the weapon could provide critical evidence, including details about its origin and ownership.
Currently, investigators are cautious in labeling the man captured in surveillance footage as a suspect, instead referring to him as a “person of interest” due to limited evidence.
Backpack Discovery
On Friday, a backpack linked to the person of interest was found. It contained a jacket—though not the one reportedly worn during the shooting—and fake Monopoly money. However, no firearm was recovered in the bag.

Expanded Investigation
The investigation now includes Greyhound bus stations along the route from New York to Atlanta, as authorities work to trace the suspect’s movements. Surveillance images show him wearing a mask in a taxi and briefly lowering it while interacting with staff at an Upper West Side hostel where he stayed.
Authorities Closing In
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed confidence that an arrest is imminent, noting police have identified the individual and are narrowing their focus. The FBI has joined the effort, releasing wanted posters and offering a $50,000 reward for information. They report the person was last spotted at the Port Authority bus terminal in Washington Heights shortly after the crime.
The investigation continues as law enforcement tightens the net in this high-profile case.
