Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz is set to join One America News Network (OAN) as a prime-time anchor beginning in January, the network confirmed on Tuesday.
“Matt Gaetz has built a reputation as a staunch advocate for conservative values, challenging entrenched Washington insiders and exposing government overreach,” OAN stated in a press release. The announcement follows a CNN report suggesting Gaetz would soon reveal his move to the network.
Gaetz’s transition to OAN comes shortly after he withdrew his candidacy for attorney general, a position he was reportedly eyeing before being informed by President-elect Donald Trump that he lacked sufficient Senate support.
The Republican firebrand will host a one-hour political talk show airing at 9 p.m. ET on weeknights. In a statement, Gaetz expressed enthusiasm for the new role: “I’m thrilled to join OAN’s innovative team and contribute to this groundbreaking expansion.”
Having announced his departure from Congress earlier this year, Gaetz emphasized his continued commitment to conservative advocacy, stating, “I’ll remain engaged in the fight, but from a different platform. I will not be joining the 119th Congress.”
OAN President Charles Herring praised the addition of Gaetz, calling him “a talented and principled leader.” Herring added, “His insider knowledge and dedication to America-first values will provide unique insights and exclusive content for OAN viewers. We are excited to welcome him to the OAN family.”
Gaetz’s move marks a significant acquisition for OAN, which has struggled with limited visibility following DirecTV’s decision to drop the channel in 2022. The network, known for promoting pro-Trump narratives and conspiracy theories, has encouraged its audience to stream its content online amid challenges in securing major distributors.
OAN has previously drawn controversy for airing unsubstantiated claims and collaborating with Russian operatives on a documentary during Trump’s first impeachment inquiry in 2019.
Gaetz’s withdrawal from consideration for attorney general followed bipartisan scrutiny and calls for transparency. Democrats had pushed for the release of a House Ethics Committee report investigating allegations against him, including claims of sexual misconduct.
The former congressman, who has denied the allegations, has faced accusations involving a relationship with a minor in 2017, which were part of a Justice Department probe. He has maintained his innocence and criticized the investigations.
Since stepping away from Congress, Gaetz has ventured into other avenues, including the personalized video message platform Cameo, where he provides custom content for fans. His profile on the platform humorously highlights his political career: “I served in Congress. Trump nominated me for Attorney General (that didn’t pan out). Once, I fired the House Speaker.”
