Mikel Obi Determined to Bring Osimhen to Chelsea
Former Super Eagles captain and ex-Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel, has vowed not to give up until he helps Chelsea sign Victor Osimhen.
Mikel made this statement on The Obi One Podcast, where he shared details about Chelsea’s failed attempt to sign the Nigerian striker.
Mikel emphasized that his determination to bring Osimhen to Chelsea isn’t because of their friendship or nationality but because Osimhen is currently one of the best strikers in the world.
“I won’t rest until I get him to the club,” Mikel said. “It’s not because he’s my friend or like a younger brother, but because he is Africa’s best player and one of the top strikers globally. I know what he can offer Chelsea, and I’m sure the fans agree too.”
Mikel also responded to those accusing Osimhen of being greedy, calling such claims “nonsense.” He explained that people don’t understand the full details of what happened during the negotiations.
“Victor really wanted to come to Chelsea. He made a lot of compromises. We reached an agreement on salary and other conditions, but a few small details couldn’t be resolved,” Mikel explained.
Mikel revealed that while both Osimhen and Chelsea were willing to make sacrifices, the deal collapsed due to issues related to paperwork and medicals.
“There were just some small issues we couldn’t resolve in time,” Mikel said. “Both sides tried their best, and I appreciate Chelsea’s effort. They showed their ambition, and Victor really wanted to join the club.”
Mikel added that Osimhen was disappointed when the deal didn’t go through.
“I spoke to him for 20 minutes after the transfer window closed. I told him to stay focused and keep working hard. He’s a strong player, like Didier Drogba or Diego Costa, and that’s exactly the kind of striker Chelsea needs.”
Chelsea made a late attempt to sign Osimhen in the final days of the summer transfer window, but the deal fell apart. Earlier in the summer, Osimhen also turned down an offer to join Saudi club Al-Ahli, even though Napoli accepted their €80 million bid.
