Isaac Balami, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed concerns raised by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar regarding the military-style guard of honour accorded to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
Reacting during a press briefing on Monday, Balami, a former Deputy Campaign Manager for the Obi/Datti campaign, described the controversy as unnecessary and out of touch with global norms.
Balami suggested that Atiku’s media handlers might not have consulted him or conducted proper research before publicizing the criticism. He noted that the former Vice President has a history of focusing on trivial issues.
Balami clarified that the group involved was the Cadet Network, an organization of individuals committed to leadership mentorship. He emphasized that Seyi Tinubu’s inspirational and philanthropic efforts have made him a role model for many young Nigerians.
“The uproar over the Cadet Network’s tribute to Seyi Tinubu is misplaced,” Balami stated. “Our national discourse should center on pressing issues such as insecurity, kidnapping, and economic challenges, rather than dwelling on harmless acts of solidarity by patriotic groups.”
Balami compared the Cadet Network’s actions to those of the Boys Scouts, Man O’ War, or similar groups, highlighting their intent to show respect to Seyi Tinubu as an emerging leader. He stressed that their gesture was based on Seyi’s personal accomplishments, not his status as the president’s son.
“Before his father’s presidency, Seyi Tinubu had already made significant contributions to society, transcending tribal, religious, and political barriers. The Cadet Network’s salute was a recognition of his selflessness and commitment to national unity,” Balami added.
He dismissed calls for an investigation into the event, arguing that such displays of solidarity are common worldwide and pose no constitutional violation.
Balami praised Seyi Tinubu for his leadership, highlighting his humanitarian interventions, including during the Maiduguri floods, and the work of his foundations in supporting Nigerian youth. He described Seyi as a bridge between generations and an example of youth leadership in action.
“The sentiment of discrediting Seyi Tinubu because of his father’s position is flawed and counterproductive,” Balami concluded.
