Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Abdullahi Sabi, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to backing dry season farming in a bid to boost food production. During a visit to a farm cluster in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, Sabi assured farmers of ongoing support from the government as they transition into dry season farming.
In honor of World Food Day 2024, the minister distributed 50 bags of fertilizers, 30 sprayers, and 10 organic sprayers to local farmers, signaling the government’s commitment to sustaining back-to-back farming efforts. He emphasized that dry season farming would commence next month, coinciding with the end of the wet season.
Sabi highlighted government initiatives to support irrigation farming through partnerships with stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and the National Agriculture Growth Scheme, under the agro-pocket program.
The visit to Bwari was part of the World Food Day celebrations aimed at assessing the progress of farm clusters. Sabi expressed satisfaction with the operations in the area, noting the active cowpea and rice fields, especially in light of recent security challenges.
The minister also highlighted that these efforts are in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, and added that there are plans to revitalize young farmers’ clubs in secondary schools in collaboration with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. This initiative aims to engage young people in agriculture and emphasize the value of food production for the country’s future food security.
