Chidimma Adetshina, who made history as the first Nigerian to finish as the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City, has announced her decision to retire from beauty pageants.
In a groundbreaking achievement, Chidimma’s remarkable performance at the prestigious contest, which saw Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig claim the crown, marked a new milestone for Nigeria. Chidimma’s accomplishment stood as a testament to her grace, cultural pride, and poise, while her national costume, “Nwanyi-Njiko,” designed by Abanobi Emmanuel Ifechukwu and Modela Couture, celebrated the unity and strength of Nigeria’s heritage.
Reflecting on her experience in an emotional video posted on social media, Chidimma shared the challenges she faced during the competition. Despite the traumatic moments, she expressed pride in the historic achievement for Nigeria.
“I feel fulfilled because I know Nigeria is really showing up this year. We did a great job putting Nigeria out there, and I wasn’t alone in this journey. It was a collective effort, and we left a mark that no one will forget,” she said.
However, Chidimma made it clear that pageantry had been a tough and overwhelming experience for her. “Honestly, it was really traumatic,” she admitted. “Sometimes, I feel really down, and I don’t even want to continue with Miss Universe anymore. I am done with pageantry.”
Looking ahead, Chidimma plans to focus on her personal growth and education. “I’ll just focus on myself, establish who I am, and further my education. I am glad I’m leaving on a positive note,” she concluded.
