Former presidential candidate and economist, Kingsley Moghalu, has urged Nigerian leaders to prioritize economic development instead of engaging in the ongoing debate surrounding Kemi Badenoch’s identity, which he described as inconsequential to Nigeria’s progress.
Moghalu shared his perspective on Sunday via a post on his official X handle.
The controversy stems from recent comments by Kemi Badenoch, a UK Member of Parliament, which some critics interpreted as an attempt to distance herself from Nigeria, her country of birth.
Addressing the matter, Moghalu stated, “Even if she were to become the UK Prime Minister tomorrow morning, it would have absolutely ZERO implications (or benefits even) for Nigeria and Nigerians.”
He emphasized that the focus should remain on solving Nigeria’s internal challenges rather than fixating on Badenoch’s comments or achievements. “So why all the fuss? Nigerian leaders and Nigerians should fix Nigeria’s problems. ‘Claiming’ Kemi or her ‘denying’ Nigeria won’t solve them,” Moghalu added.
His remarks come in response to Badenoch’s growing political prominence in the UK and the subsequent backlash over her statements, including criticisms from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who accused her of disregarding her Nigerian heritage.
