Mohamed Salah has once again sparked controversy among some of his Muslim followers after sharing a festive family photo in front of a Christmas tree, accompanied by the hashtag #MerryChristmas. The Liverpool star, who is Muslim, posted the image featuring himself, his wife Magi, and their daughters, Makka and Kayan, all dressed in matching pajamas and smiling in front of a decorated tree with a gingerbread figure.
While Muslims do not traditionally celebrate Christmas, some individuals do partake in certain aspects of the holiday. However, Salah’s post received significant backlash from his Muslim followers on social media, with many expressing disappointment. One fan commented, “You let me down, bro,” while others urged him to delete the post.
Despite the criticism, Salah’s supporters also came to his defense, wishing him and his family well for the holiday season. One fan wrote, “Merry Christmas Mo. Ignore all these idiots. Hope you and your family have a well-deserved holiday season.”
Salah, who has been in outstanding form this season with 15 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League, is currently leading the race for the Golden Boot. He also made history in Liverpool’s last match against Tottenham, becoming the first-ever Premier League player to register 10 goals and assists before Christmas.
Though Salah continues to excel on the field, the controversy surrounding his annual Christmas posts persists. This year’s post follows a similar one from 2023, which did not feature the family but included a Christmas tree. Every year, his festive posts generate a mix of support and anger among his followers.
The timing of the post also coincides with ongoing uncertainty about Salah’s future at Liverpool, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, alongside those of fellow players Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk. Salah recently expressed doubt about remaining at the club, revealing that no offers to extend his contract had been made as of December.
Despite the challenges and online criticism, Salah’s holiday tradition shows no signs of ending, as he continues to share his festive moments with his followers.
