The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has announced plans to resume the collection of a $300 landing fee for helicopter operations in the country.
The fee, which has sparked opposition from helicopter operators, was initially suspended following objections that it posed an additional financial burden and lacked legal backing.
In a statement issued in May by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, signed by the Head of Press and Public Affairs, Odutayo Oluseyi, the ministry defended the levy as a globally recognized practice aimed at enhancing operational standards and recovering costs. It highlighted examples from nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and India, where similar charges are implemented.
During the 53rd Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association, held in Kano on Thursday, NAMA’s Director of Air Traffic Services, Tayo John, reiterated the agency’s intent to reinstate the fee. He explained that while the government had previously directed the suspension of the charge due to prevailing national circumstances, the collection would now resume to alleviate financial challenges faced by the agency.
John stated, “In the coming weeks, we will reintroduce the $300 landing fee for helicopter operators. Although we began collecting the fee earlier, the government asked us to halt it. However, this time, the collection will proceed without interruption.”
The move underscores NAMA’s efforts to align with international practices while addressing its financial needs.
