The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign to educate passengers and airlines on their rights and responsibilities. The campaign, led by the NCAA’s Consumer Protection Department, seeks to foster better communication and adherence to aviation regulations.
Speaking at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, NCAA Director General, Capt. Chris Najomo, emphasized the need for mutual understanding:
“This campaign aims to ensure passengers are informed about their rights and obligations, while airlines uphold their duties. Our goal is fairness, not favoritism towards either party,” he stated.
Passenger Rights Highlighted
Capt. Najomo outlined key passenger entitlements in cases of flight disruptions:
- After 2 hours of delay: Airlines must provide snacks and refreshments.
- After 3 hours of delay: Passengers are entitled to refunds, processed either in cash or online within two weeks.
- After 4 hours of delay: Airlines must arrange hotel accommodations for overnight delays.
He also urged airlines to communicate delays promptly through SMS or other channels, emphasizing that clear communication can alleviate passenger frustrations.
“No airline delays flights intentionally, but timely updates can help passengers manage their plans,” Najomo added.
Campaign Rollout
The initiative has already begun at major airports, including Port Harcourt, and will expand nationwide. Capt. Najomo assured travelers of smoother experiences during the festive season, citing the addition of new aircraft to the fleets of Air Peace, United Nigeria, Ibom Air, and ValueJet.
NCAA’s Commitment to Fairness
Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection at the NCAA, reiterated the agency’s dedication to fairness.
“The NCAA supports passengers when they are wronged and stands by airlines when they are justified. This initiative is about creating awareness and reducing misunderstandings,” he said.
Achimugu encouraged passengers to familiarize themselves with aviation regulations and assured them that the NCAA is always ready to mediate disputes when necessary.
This campaign underscores the NCAA’s commitment to improving the travel experience and ensuring fair treatment for both passengers and airlines.
