The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has pledged N30 billion to support the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines, and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) in fostering youth entrepreneurship across the region.
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC Managing Director, made the announcement during an interview at the NDDC headquarters in Port Harcourt. The statement, issued by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, outlined the NDDC’s commitment to regional economic development.
Ogbuku emphasized the importance of the NDCCITMA in training young people, assisting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and designing industry-relevant skill development programs. He confirmed that the NDDC is dedicated to helping the Chamber drive economic growth by providing funding, training, and networking opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs.
“We are allocating N30 billion to support projects and businesses that will ensure the long-term success of youth development initiatives,” Ogbuku stated. He added that the funds would be used as matching grants to boost local businesses and help entrepreneurs expand their operations.
He further assured that the funds would be released soon, allowing the Chamber of Commerce to begin implementing its programs. “We aim to empower young people to move beyond merely receiving stipends, and instead engage in productive ventures that benefit both them and the region,” Ogbuku explained.
In collaboration with the Bank of Industry, the NDDC is focusing on sustainable youth development strategies. Ogbuku acknowledged that while past initiatives had been underfunded and poorly documented, the new approach targets genuine entrepreneurs rather than those who lack a true business commitment.
“The government alone cannot employ all graduates, but by fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurship, we can empower them to create jobs and expand their businesses,” he said.
Ogbuku stressed the importance of keeping the region’s youth engaged in meaningful activities, as doing so is vital for ensuring peace and stability in the Niger Delta. The NDDC’s support will be directed toward young, registered members of the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce.
The NDDC also highlighted its Youth Internship Scheme, which will help train young entrepreneurs and assist SMEs. The scheme will involve one-year placements at organizations where participants will gain valuable skills. Ogbuku mentioned that the list of successful applicants would be finalized soon, with payments for beneficiaries set to begin in January 2025.
The NDDC is working closely with consultants to ensure the smooth rollout of the program, and the final list of participants will be announced in the coming weeks to ensure a seamless implementation of the youth empowerment initiatives.
