The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has vowed to intensify efforts to combat cultism, armed robbery, and communal conflicts in the state.
During his inaugural press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, Adepoju declared that the command would adopt a zero-tolerance stance against kidnapping, oil bunkering, and other violent crimes. He highlighted the importance of a strategic and proactive approach in addressing recent crises tied to political interests and the challenges of maintaining law and order.
Adepoju outlined his priorities, which include enhancing intelligence gathering, strengthening community policing, and fostering public engagement. He emphasized a commitment to eradicating corruption, reducing youth violence, and ensuring swift responses to emergencies while collaborating with various stakeholders.
“Our focus areas include bolstering intelligence gathering, collaborating with communities, traditional institutions, and security agencies to prevent crimes proactively,” Adepoju stated.
The CP stressed the need for rebuilding public trust through professionalism and respectful interactions between the police and the public. He reiterated that his administration would enforce discipline among police officers, holding them accountable for any misconduct.
Adepoju also pledged to tackle cultism and youth unrest by intensifying actions against cult-related activities and partnering with youth groups and civil society to promote peace. Additionally, he promised to combat oil theft and environmental crimes by dismantling criminal networks in the oil sector in collaboration with relevant agencies.
He assured that his leadership would be driven by integrity, transparency, and a sense of duty while calling for the cooperation of all stakeholders to create a safer Rivers State.
