The death toll from the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday has climbed to 86, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
In a press release, NSEMA Director General Abdullahi Baba-Arah confirmed that the remains of the deceased were recovered in a collaborative effort involving NSEMA, Gurara LGA officials, and volunteers. Of the victims, 80 were laid to rest in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Healthcare (PHC) premises, while five were handed over to their families for burial.
The mass burial was conducted between 5 p.m. and midnight, with dedicated volunteers ensuring the proper and respectful handling of the victims. Tragically, one person succumbed to injuries sustained in the explosion while receiving treatment at the Dikko PHC, bringing the number of injured individuals to 55.
Efforts to manage the aftermath of the disaster are ongoing, with NSEMA and other relevant agencies working together to support the injured and assist affected families.
This devastating incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and increased public awareness to prevent such occurrences in the future.
