Nigeria’s collaboration with Germany has contributed to improved electricity supply in the country, according to Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu. The announcement followed a meeting between the presidents of both nations in Abuja on Wednesday.
Mr. Adelabu highlighted that the partnership includes the management of two transmission power substations by German energy company Siemens. As part of the agreement, Siemens has overseen the installation and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile power substations, which have collectively increased Nigeria’s transmission grid capacity by 750 megawatts.
Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, continues to face severe electricity shortages, with many residents receiving less than 10 hours of power daily. The country generates less than 7,000 megawatts of electricity but struggles to transmit its full capacity. Officials hope that ongoing efforts to upgrade the grid will address these challenges and enhance power transmission across the country.
Mr. Adelabu also noted that Siemens is implementing both Brownfield and Greenfield transmission substations under the Presidential Power Initiative, which aims to modernize and expand Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
Further details of the initiative are expected to be released later.
