Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has reiterated the country’s respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Niger. Speaking on Tuesday, Tuggar assured Niger’s government and citizens of Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and regional cooperation within West Africa.
In a statement, the minister expressed concern over recent remarks by Abdourahman Tchiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland in Niger. He emphasized that Nigeria remains resolute in seeking peaceful dialogue, which he described as essential for achieving lasting solutions.
Tuggar assured that Nigeria would not engage in any actions that could compromise Niger’s sovereignty or security.
The statement read: “We uphold our respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with the principles of ECOWAS.
“We encourage open and constructive dialogue between our governments and urge Niger’s leadership to join us in addressing shared concerns through frank discussions.
“To build mutual trust, we are ready to consider confidence-building initiatives, such as collective support measures, to mitigate the humanitarian challenges faced by border communities.
“We appeal to regional and international partners to prioritize reconciliation and stability, avoiding actions that could exacerbate divisions.
“Nigeria remains committed to diplomacy, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace. Through constructive engagement, we are optimistic about fostering a more stable and prosperous future for both nations.”
