The Nigerian Army has reported a terrorist assault on its 101 Special Forces Battalion under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Kukawa Town, Borno State. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulted in the deaths of three soldiers. The assailants, described as heavily armed and traveling in gun trucks and motorcycles, launched the offensive from the Gudumbali axis.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the terrorists attempted to breach the military camp using a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED). However, the troops, supported by the Air Component and the Nigerian Army’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command, mounted a robust defense, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
The Army noted, “The resolute actions of the troops forced the terrorists into a chaotic retreat, inflicting heavy casualties on them. Twelve terrorists were neutralized during the encounter, with several others escaping with gunshot wounds.”
Recovered items from the operation included five AK-47 rifles, an RPG bomb and tube, two anti-aircraft guns, a QJC gun, an NSV heavy machine gun, 40 motorcycles, and 152 rounds of Shilka ammunition. The statement also confirmed the destruction of four out of seven VBIEDs deployed by the attackers.
“Regrettably, three courageous soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice during the attack. Efforts to secure the area are ongoing, including house-to-house searches to ensure safety,” the statement added.
Lt. Gen. O. O. Oluyede, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, praised the troops for their bravery and urged them to sustain their momentum through ongoing clearance operations and patrols.
