The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate implementation of the National Minimum Wage of N70,000 by the Zamfara State government.

The decision was reached following a unanimous resolution by the Zamfara State council, which also endorsed the directive from the NLC National Secretariat issued after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on November 8, 2024.

A communique signed by the State NLC chairman, Comrade Sani Halliru, and made public in Gusau, the state capital, condemned the refusal of some state governments, including Zamfara, to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act. The NLC described this refusal as a betrayal of workers’ rights amidst the current economic struggles.

Reports indicate that all affiliate unions in the state have supported the ultimatum given to the state government to implement the minimum wage by the end of November 2024.

“Failure to implement the wage will force the NLC and its affiliates to begin an indefinite industrial action, effectively shutting down the state from December 1, 2024,” the communique stated.

The NLC reaffirmed its solidarity with Nigerian workers in their fight for justice and dignity, emphasizing that the failure to enforce the minimum wage is a direct violation of the law, morality, and the well-being of workers.

“Workers in Zamfara State are urged to prepare for this industrial action, which is a crucial step in securing their rights and improving their livelihoods,” the communique added.

The NLC Zamfara State Council remains committed to fighting for workers’ welfare and ensuring that the government meets its obligations. “Justice delayed is justice denied. Nigerian workers deserve their rightful wages, and we will not rest until the minimum wage is fully implemented in Zamfara State,” the statement concluded.
