Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has condemned the tragic airstrike that mistakenly targeted two communities in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State, resulting in at least 10 deaths and numerous injuries.
The incident, which occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, involved three military aircraft reportedly dropping bombs after soldiers surrounded the communities, local reports suggest.
In a statement on Wednesday, Tambuwal extended his condolences to the affected families, describing the victims as innocent and hardworking citizens uninvolved in criminal activities. He urged for a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into the incident, calling for justice and accountability.
“This tragedy has not only robbed families of their loved ones but also caused immense suffering in these communities,” Tambuwal said. “The loss of civilian lives during operations intended to protect us is unacceptable and must be thoroughly investigated.”
The senator also emphasized the need for military precision and accountability in combating threats such as banditry and terrorism.
While expressing solidarity with Sokoto State residents, he stated, “During this painful time, my thoughts are with you as you cope with this devastating loss. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly.”
Tambuwal urged stakeholders to strengthen measures to prevent similar tragedies and ensure the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.
The airstrike has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for an overhaul of protocols guiding military operations in civilian areas. An investigation into the incident is yet to be announced by the authorities.
