Nigerian Police Allegedly Pressuring Speed Darlington to Issue Public Apology to Burna Boy

Musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or “Akpi,” is reportedly being pressured by Nigerian police authorities to record a public apology to fellow artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy.

According to sources, the police in Abuja, where Speed Darlington is currently detained, are allegedly urging him to apologise, citing Burna Boy’s status as a “superstar.” A source close to the matter revealed, “The police are insisting that Darlington cannot challenge Burna Boy and are pushing for a public apology video.”

Speed Darlington’s ordeal began earlier this week when he was reportedly moved from Owerri, Imo State, to Abuja. Reports indicate that he was transferred to the Force Intelligence Department (FID) in a move perceived by some as an attempt to escalate his punishment. Deputy Inspector-General Dasuki Galadanchi has reportedly taken personal charge of the case.

Prominent human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has alleged that Burna Boy is behind Speed Darlington’s arrest, accusing him of using police resources to harass his client. In a social media post, Adeyanju criticised Burna Boy for contradicting his anti-oppression stance, writing, “Burna Boy, who has built a reputation on songs against oppression, is now oppressing Akpi.”

Speed Darlington’s arrest reportedly stems from allegations of cyberstalking Burna Boy, though the details of the case remain unclear. Sources claim that he was arrested upon his return to Nigeria for a show and has since been moved between multiple police formations, eventually landing at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja.

Adeyanju confirmed that he has met with Speed Darlington, who remains in good spirits. He also disclosed that while he was allowed to read the petition against his client, the police refused to release a copy to him. The lawyer maintains that the petition lacks substantial grounds to justify the musician’s detention.

Efforts are ongoing to secure Speed Darlington’s release on bail, while the case continues to draw public attention and debate over the use of law enforcement in private disputes.
