Nigerian Railway Facing Extensive Vandalism, Says MD
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised alarms over the escalating incidents of vandalism and theft affecting its infrastructure nationwide.During a visit to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) headquarters in Abuja, the Managing Director of NRC, Mr. Freeborn Okhirie, expressed his concerns.
He praised the NSCDC for their consistent efforts in safeguarding Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), which have led to numerous arrests of those involved in stealing railway sleepers. However, Okhirie noted that despite the NSCDC’s diligent work to protect the NRC from economic sabotage, the corporation continues to experience significant losses due to ongoing vandalism of its facilities across the country.
“Rail tracks continue to be targeted by vandals, and the number of perpetrators is increasing despite the arrests made,” he stated with frustration. The NRC head emphasized the need for a collective approach to tackle what he described as “an organized conspiracy to undermine the nation’s economy.” He called for stronger collaboration among key stakeholders and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for these acts of vandalism, along with their sponsors, are brought to justice.
Okhirie also urged the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending suspects, stressing the importance of securing infrastructure that serves the nation’s interests. In response, NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, revealed that the Corps had impounded over 20 trailers transporting vandalized railway sleepers.
He also mentioned that numerous suspects had been detained in connection with these crimes.Audi reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to intensifying efforts to curb such activities but expressed concern over the delays faced in prosecuting suspects. He added that the NSCDC would enhance its internal disciplinary measures and hold any personnel found sabotaging their efforts accountable. He also requested the NRC’s support in improving the welfare of the personnel assigned to protect railway infrastructure.
