The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has commenced monitoring operations following an oil spill at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, located in Bonny, Rivers State.
The spill reportedly resulted from a ruptured pipeline, prompting SPDC to take immediate action by shutting down the affected pipeline to prevent further leakage. Containment booms have also been deployed to limit the spread of the oil and protect nearby communities from potential environmental hazards.
Despite these containment efforts, the spill has already reached the shoreline, raising concerns about its impact on the local ecosystem and livelihoods.
In response, NIMASA has activated its emergency operations center to monitor the situation closely and coordinate an effective response. The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other relevant stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and identify appropriate remedial actions.
NIMASA reassured the public of its commitment to minimizing the environmental and social impacts of the incident, emphasizing its determination to ensure a swift and coordinated response to mitigate damage.
