Residents affected by the Bodija explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, which occurred on January 16, 2024, expressed their ongoing struggles on Wednesday, highlighting that they have yet to return home nine months after the incident.
In a plea to both the State and Federal Governments, the victims are urging more action to alleviate their suffering, as many are still displaced from their homes. Reports indicate that the explosion resulted in five fatalities, 77 injuries of varying severity, and damage to 58 houses on Dejo Oyelese Street.
Speaking on behalf of the victims at the Dilay Event Centre in Ibadan, the Chairman of the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group, Yakubu Adedigba, conveyed their distress, stating the dire need for government assistance.
“As concerned citizens, we appreciate the support provided by the Oyo State government thus far, but we now earnestly call upon both the Federal and State Governments to enhance their efforts in aiding the residents of DOVG,” he said.
Adedigba emphasized the gravity of their situation, noting that many have been unable to return to their homes and are currently living with relatives and friends. “Some houses destroyed by the explosion are now overgrown with weeds and have been taken over by wild animals. Many of us are senior citizens with limited means, making it impossible to rebuild our homes at this stage in our lives,” he added.
