The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the Tax Reform Bills presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly, urging a more inclusive process that involves key national stakeholders.
In its New Year address to Nigerians on Tuesday, the NLC highlighted the importance of prioritizing citizens’ welfare and addressing the increasing cost of living as top priorities for the government in 2025.
NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the tax bills, describing them as controversial, particularly in northern Nigeria, where they have been viewed as harmful to economic growth. Ajaero emphasized that a well-rounded national tax policy should be developed through collaboration among various sectors to ensure transparency and acceptance.
In its statement titled “In 2025, hope is in our collective resolve,” the NLC also urged the government to focus on policies that enhance access to essential services such as food, healthcare, housing, education, transportation, and security. The union stressed that improving worker welfare is vital to effective governance and overall national development.
Ajaero also reaffirmed the union’s commitment to pushing for an upward wage review in response to the economic challenges facing workers. He emphasized the need for adherence to the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and pledged to engage with the government to ensure fair wage adjustments.
The NLC also condemned the growing use of force in dealings with unions, warning that such tactics could harm industrial harmony.
“As we enter 2025, the Nigeria Labour Congress extends New Year greetings to all workers and citizens. The hardships we have faced must not define us; instead, we must harness our collective strength to move Nigeria forward,” the statement read.
The NLC urged the government to engage in meaningful social dialogue and respect agreements with trade unions to maintain peace in the labour sector.
Looking ahead, the NLC plans to host a national dialogue in Ibadan this January to discuss a new tax framework that supports national development. The union expressed hope for productive engagement with social partners to build a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
The NLC’s statement concluded, “We once again call on the federal government to withdraw the current tax bills before the National Assembly, ensuring all key stakeholders are included in the process. As we proceed with the national dialogue in Ibadan, our goal is to co-create a new tax law that promotes national growth and enjoys broad acceptance.”
As 2025 begins, the NLC stressed the importance of prioritizing industrial peace through social dialogue and respecting agreements with trade unions. The union also called on all levels of government to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and engage in wage reviews to protect workers’ welfare in light of current economic challenges.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and ensuring governance reflects the needs of citizens, urging unity and collective action to propel Nigeria toward sustainable development.
