North Korean soldiers have joined the battle in Ukraine, providing significant support to Russian forces after Ukraine’s summer advance into the Kursk region of Russia. Initially inexperienced, these troops have adapted quickly to the battlefield, marking a concerning new phase in the war with potential long-term consequences for global security.
Pyongyang’s involvement comes after an agreement between Russia and North Korea to provide military assistance if either side is attacked. Ukrainian forces, unfamiliar with their new adversaries, have found the North Korean troops disciplined and highly methodical, though some, including Ukrainian special forces, have criticized their outdated tactics, shared in battlefield drone footage on social media.
The North Korean military, with an active force of 1.2 million, is one of the largest in the world but has been limited in its engagements outside the Korean Peninsula. Their lack of experience with modern warfare tools, such as drones, posed early challenges. However, Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson, Andrii Yusov, warned that North Korea’s troops are gaining crucial battlefield experience, posing a significant global challenge.
Despite Ukrainian, U.S., and South Korean claims that up to 12,000 North Korean troops are fighting in the Kursk region, Russia has not publicly acknowledged their involvement. Though reports surfaced in October, Ukrainian forces only confirmed engagement in December. Analysts believe that without the support of North Korean troops, Russia would have struggled to maintain its aggressive strategy in Kursk, which has resulted in significant Ukrainian casualties.
The presence of North Korean troops is cleverly concealed, as they wear Russian military uniforms and carry fake IDs. However, intercepted communications have revealed their Korean accents, confirming their identity. They use their own equipment and have learned to adapt to the use of drones and improvised explosives, gaining firsthand knowledge of the tactics used by Ukrainian forces.
In the early stages of the conflict, North Korean soldiers moved in large, vulnerable formations, making them easy targets for drones and artillery. Yet, their discipline and physical readiness, combined with increasingly effective tactics, suggest they could soon become a formidable force on the battlefield.
While their tactics initially led to heavy losses, with up to 4,000 North Korean casualties reported, analysts believe their growing combat effectiveness, combined with their disciplined approach, could make them a serious military asset. Ukraine’s military intelligence also noted that North Korean soldiers have avoided surrendering, as capture is seen as dishonorable in their culture, further complicating the effort to gather intelligence from prisoners.
The presence of North Korean troops in Ukraine has drawn global attention, with concerns that their involvement could enhance North Korea’s military capabilities and increase its potential for global arms sales. As North Korean forces refine their skills in combat, the international community is urged to prepare for the broader implications of this growing alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang.
