The Ogun State Government has suspended a teacher, Amzadjo Elijah, from Obada Grammar School following the reported death of a student, Monday Arijo, due to a punishment he allegedly received.
In a statement released on the state government’s X page on Sunday, it was disclosed that Arijo, after 10 days in the hospital, passed away following an intense punishment, reportedly 162 frog jumps and 24 cane strokes, ordered by the school principal, allegedly due to a remark Arijo made regarding a dustbin purchase.
The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology also issued a query to the principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, requiring her to justify why disciplinary actions should not follow for the use of corporal punishment, which is reportedly against state regulations. The teacher in question has also been detained.
Additionally, the government extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing Arijo as an exceptional student and assuring justice. A condolence letter, signed by the Permanent Secretary, highlighted his lasting impact on classmates, teachers, and the state.
