Reports of vote-buying emerged from several polling units during the Ondo State governorship election, with voters allegedly receiving cash inducements after casting their ballots.
At Ward 02, Polling Unit 3, Eruoba, and Polling Unit 17, Egbedi Ward 11, Owode Imuagun, both located in the Arakale Market area of Akure Local Government Area, vote trading was reportedly observed.
In Eruoba Ward, a man was seen distributing undisclosed amounts of money to voters after they cast their ballots. Meanwhile, at Owode Imuagun, voters reportedly recorded their names after voting and were directed to a nearby building to collect cash.
Officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were present along Arakale Road, monitoring election activities. However, no arrests were made by the agency as of the time of reporting.
The presence of security agencies, including the EFCC, underscores efforts to curb electoral malpractice, but the incidents of vote-buying highlight persistent challenges in ensuring credible elections.
More updates are expected as monitoring continues.
