Gunshots were reportedly fired early Saturday morning in Ofosun Village, an Ondo community near the Edo State border, causing panic among residents. According to locals, unidentified individuals fired into the air, prompting villagers to remain indoors for safety.
A resident, Dauda, told reporters, “We don’t know who they are, but gunshots have been heard in some parts of the village since morning. Thankfully, there are no casualties, but everyone is staying indoors.”
Allegations of Thuggery in Idanre LGA
The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Festus Akingbaso, alleged that thugs infiltrated several villages, including Ofosun, Omifunfun, and Allah, in Idanre Local Government Area.
He claimed the thugs, reportedly linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC), aimed to intimidate voters and disrupt the election process. Akingbaso said, “There are plans not to allow people in the villages to vote. Thugs even broke into the house of a party member in Ofosun to prevent him from voting.” He noted that the matter had been reported to the DPO and DSS, but no action had been taken yet.
APC Denies Allegations
Reacting to the claims, the spokesperson of the APC, Steve Otaloro, dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. He stated, “Our party is not involved in any form of violence. Voting has been peaceful across the state, and any claims of thuggery should be thoroughly investigated. These accusations seem to be an attempt to discredit us.”
Police Response
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmi Odunlami, said she had not received any official report about the incident, as she was in transit.
Election Update
Despite these tensions, the election process reportedly remains peaceful in most areas, with commendations for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the timely delivery of materials. Security agencies are urged to investigate the allegations thoroughly and ensure a secure environment for voters.
Further updates are expected as more details emerge.
