Paralympics: Enoh Applauds Nworgu for Winning Powerlifting Silver Medal
The Nigerian Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has commended Esther Nworgu for winning Nigeria’s second medal—a silver in the women’s 41kg para-powerlifting event at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Nworgu set two new Paralympic records during the competition, lifting 118 kg in her final attempt. This remarkable feat was just one kilogram short of the gold, which went to China’s Zhe Cui with a lift of 119 kg.
In her earlier attempts, Nworgu lifted 106 kg and 112 kg, establishing her as a strong contender. However, it was her record-breaking 118 kg lift that secured her the silver medal.
Senator Enoh celebrated Nworgu’s achievement in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, stating, “Congratulations to Esther Ogechi Nworgu for winning Nigeria’s second medal at the ongoing Paralympic Games. You set Paralympic records with your lifts of 112 kg and 118 kg. Though you narrowly missed the gold, we are incredibly proud of your performance.”
Nworgu’s silver medal adds to Nigeria’s impressive run at the Paralympics, following Eniola Bolaji’s historic bronze in Para badminton earlier in the week. Bolaji became the first African to secure a medal in badminton, defeating Oksana Kozyna from Ukraine in a 2-0 (21-9, 21-9) victory in the women’s singles SL3 event.
The minister, who has been present in Paris to support the Nigerian team, expressed his pride in the athletes’ accomplishments. He highlighted their determination and belief, encouraging them to aim for more podium finishes.
“The Ministry will continue to provide Team Nigeria with all the support needed to achieve podium success. I have faith in your capabilities, and now it’s time to make Nigeria proud,” Enoh said.
With Nworgu’s silver medal, Team Nigeria’s medal tally at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games looks promising, with several events still ahead.
