The Nigerian Police Force has attributed the recent explosion in Niger State to the unauthorized stockpiling of explosives. According to the Commissioner of Police in Niger State, CP Shawulu Danmamman, the explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, was the result of dynamite being stored indiscriminately in residential areas, which had been concealed by the local community.
CP Danmamman’s statement echoed earlier comments by Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, who on Monday revealed that preliminary investigations pointed to the illegal storage of explosives as the likely cause of the blast. The explosion, which occurred at a mining site in Sabon Pegi on Sunday, is said to have been caused by explosives stored by one Yushua Maikampala, a resident of New Bussa.
Maikampala is believed to have purchased and stored explosives and related materials in a house in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area.
CP Danmamman further emphasized the importance of public involvement in preventing such incidents. He stressed the role of community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, which he described as essential for avoiding similar tragedies in the future.
