Pope Francis sustained a bruise on his forearm following a fall at the Santa Marta residence in the Vatican, the Holy See confirmed on Thursday. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has faced several health challenges in recent years, is reportedly wearing a sling as a precaution.
According to a statement from the Vatican press office, the fall occurred Thursday morning but did not result in any fractures.
“Pope Francis suffered a contusion on his right forearm after a fall at the Santa Marta house this morning. There are no fractures, but the arm has been immobilized as a precaution,” the statement read.
This marks the second time in recent months that Pope Francis has experienced a fall. In December, he was seen with a noticeable bruise on his right jaw after reportedly falling from his bed.
The Argentine-born leader of the Catholic Church, who has served as pope since 2013, continues to grapple with recurring health issues, including knee and hip pain, as well as bronchitis episodes. Since 2022, he has relied on a wheelchair for mobility.
Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis remains active in his role. In September, he successfully completed a four-nation trip, the longest of his papacy in terms of distance and duration.
