Alejandro Arcos, the newly inaugurated mayor of Chilpancingo, has been tragically murdered just six days into his term, amid a surge of violence that has gripped the region, largely linked to drug cartel activities.
Arcos’s body was discovered shortly after his newly appointed secretary, Francisco Tapia, was also shot and killed in a separate incident, deepening the sense of insecurity in the city.
Guerrero State Governor, Evelyn Salgado, expressed her deep sorrow and anger over the killings, stating that the murders “fill us with indignation,” as the city mourns the loss of two prominent officials in less than a week.
Arcos had only recently assumed office and was deeply engaged in efforts to provide disaster relief following the devastating floods caused by Hurricane John last month. Hours before his death, he was seen meeting with local residents and relief workers, as shown on his social media accounts.
Senator Alejandro Moreno described Arcos and Tapia as “young and dedicated officials who were committed to advancing their community.” He called on the federal government to take over the investigation, stressing the urgent need to address the region’s entrenched issues with violence and lawlessness.
Since the government launched its military offensive against drug cartels in 2006, over 450,000 people have been killed, with many more missing, as violence continues to plague Mexico.
