President Paul Biya’s Extended Absence Sparks Rumors of His Death

The prolonged absence of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has given rise to widespread rumors that he may have passed away in a military hospital in France. The speculation began after Biya, who attended the China-Africa Summit in September, failed to return to Cameroon as expected following the event.

Biya, aged 91, has been in power for 42 years, having taken office on November 6, 1982. He is Africa’s second-longest-serving president, the world’s longest-serving non-royal leader, and the oldest head of state.

Further rumors suggest that France may be maneuvering to position Biya’s eldest son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as his successor to ensure “continuity” in leadership.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) by Cameroonian user @Okahewahedede stated, “Paul Biya ruled Cameroon for 42 years and almost brought the country to its knees. Now he is dead, and France is doing everything to install his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as the next leader.”

Another user, @jordanly00, remarked, “This is not new; he hasn’t been governing the country for some time now. These neocolonial actors are already fighting over succession… They are simply waiting for Biya’s final wish to ‘die in power,’ which he had predicted for 2024.”

As the rumors continue to swirl, the government’s silence is deepening uncertainty about the future of Cameroon’s leadership.
