Russian President Vladimir Putin held a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, reaffirming the strong bilateral ties between Moscow and Beijing. The discussion took place just a day after Donald Trump assumed office as the 47th President of the United States.
Over recent years, Putin and Xi have cultivated a close relationship, fostering deeper cooperation between Russia and China, particularly following Russia’s 2022 military actions in Ukraine. China has emerged as a key importer of Russian oil and gas, as well as a vital supplier of critical technologies in the face of sweeping Western sanctions imposed on Moscow.
During their call, Putin highlighted that Russia-China relations are founded on mutual interests, equality, and shared benefits. He emphasized that their partnership is resilient, unaffected by internal political shifts or global conditions. “We jointly support the development of a more just multipolar global order and work to ensure indivisible security across Eurasia and the world,” Putin stated, according to Russian state media. He further noted that collaboration between the two nations plays a stabilizing role in global affairs.
President Xi echoed similar sentiments, praising the robust cooperation between Beijing and Moscow, asserting that it contributes “positive energy” toward reforming and advancing the global system.
Although neither leader explicitly referenced Trump during the publicly broadcast portion of their call, the timing suggests an effort to align their approach in dealing with the new U.S. administration.
Xi had earlier spoken with Trump, expressing hopes for constructive relations between China and the United States. Meanwhile, Trump has indicated potential economic measures against China in his second term, including tariffs, while also leaving room for cooperation on issues such as regional conflicts and combating the illicit fentanyl trade.
As of now, Putin has not had direct talks with Trump but extended congratulations to him during a televised address to Russian officials. He welcomed Trump’s willingness to engage in dialogue with Moscow. Following his inauguration, Trump told reporters that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had expressed interest in a peace agreement and hoped Putin would reciprocate, warning that continued conflict could further harm Russia’s economy.
Putin responded positively to Trump’s openness, stating during a meeting with Russia’s Security Council that Moscow is ready to restore direct communication channels that had been severed by the previous U.S. administration. He also acknowledged Trump’s commitment to preventing a global conflict, calling it a welcomed approach.
Looking ahead, Putin underscored the importance of mutual respect and equal footing in negotiations, noting the critical roles both nations play in global security and stability. He reiterated Moscow’s willingness to engage in talks with Washington regarding the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the necessity of addressing its root causes.
“The objective should not be a temporary ceasefire or a pause for rearmament, but rather a long-lasting peace that respects the legitimate interests of all people and nations involved,” Putin stressed.
As diplomatic efforts unfold, the world watches closely to see how relations between Russia, China, and the U.S. evolve under Trump’s leadership.
