The Oyo State Government has pledged to take legal action against a reckless driver responsible for the death of a traffic officer from the State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Kehinde Fabunmi, in the Agbowo area of Ibadan North Local Government on Saturday.
Fabunmi, a Level 4 officer of OYRTMA, was fatally struck by a Black 4matic Benz (license plate LSD 862 JS) after its driver ignored a traffic light. The driver was initially apprehended by the OYRTMA officers.
On Monday, OYRTMA Chairman Adekoya Adesagba strongly condemned the killing, emphasizing that Fabunmi was carrying out his official duties to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters in Agbowo.
Adesagba stated, “Our officers are dedicated to safeguarding lives and property. Any act of assault or disrespect towards them will be met with severe legal consequences.”
He also praised the quick action of the police and OYRTMA officers in detaining the suspect, extending condolences to Fabunmi’s family.
“The suspect will face prosecution. No one who harms or disrespects our officers will be spared,” Adesagba added. “This tragic event highlights the risks traffic officers face and underscores the importance of drivers obeying traffic laws and exercising caution.”
The driver, after being detained by OYRTMA officers, attempted to flee by reversing his vehicle and striking Fabunmi, who was approaching the front of the car. Fabunmi suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Orogun for initial treatment. He was later transferred to another facility within Ibadan, where he was sadly confirmed dead.
The suspect was arrested while trying to escape near the University of Ibadan and has been arraigned in a Magistrate Court in Iyaganku. However, due to the court’s break, the case has been postponed until Thursday. The driver remains in police custody.
