Russia Urges Israel to Withdraw Troops from Lebanon, Citing Risk of Full-Scale War
Russia has called for Israel to immediately pull its forces out of Lebanon, warning that the ongoing conflict could escalate into a larger war in the Middle East, according to reports from Reuters.
In a statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry, officials condemned Israel’s recent military operations in Lebanon. “Russia condemns the attacks on Lebanon and urges Israeli authorities to halt hostilities, withdraw troops, and actively pursue peaceful resolutions to the Middle East conflict,” the statement declared.
Earlier this week, the Israeli military reported conducting limited raids into southern Lebanon, involving commando and paratrooper units. These operations are said to target Hezbollah positions, which Israel claims pose a direct threat to its northern border. Hezbollah has responded by launching missile attacks on Israel, including strikes aimed at intelligence facilities near Tel Aviv.
Russia’s statement cautioned that Israel’s military activities, especially following the targeted killings of key Hezbollah leaders, would likely intensify tensions. “It is clear that the actions taken by Israel’s military and political leadership will only lead to greater violence in the Middle East,” the Russian officials warned.
This conflict unfolds amidst Israel’s larger airstrike campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, which has already caused considerable casualties. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that over 1,000 people have been killed, with more than 2,900 injured as the humanitarian situation worsens.
With military operations continuing, both sides appear to be preparing for further confrontations. Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has vowed to use all available means to safeguard national security, while Hezbollah remains committed to resisting Israeli advances.
International leaders are closely watching the escalating violence, calling for de-escalation and emphasizing the need for diplomatic efforts. The United Nations has expressed concern about the growing humanitarian crisis in both Lebanon and Gaza, as civilian casualties mount.
