The Nigerian Senate has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that a national population census is conducted before the current administration ends in 2027.
This pledge was reaffirmed during a recent budget defense session with the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Isa Kwarra.
Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Committee on National Identity Management and Population, stated, “We will not relent until the census is conducted before this administration concludes.” He also mentioned that the Senate is preparing to meet with President Bola Tinubu to emphasize the urgency of conducting the census in 2025. “We will be reaching out to the President soon, with a formal letter through the Senate President, stressing the need for the census this year,” he added.
Senator Olalere Oyewunmi also highlighted the importance of pressuring the President to prioritize the census.
Similarly, Senator Diket Plang expressed concern over the country’s dependence on estimated population figures, which hinder proper planning. “It is unfortunate that we are still working with estimates in this modern age. How can we plan effectively without knowing the exact population? It’s troubling that 2024 passed without achieving 90 percent performance,” he said, calling for a definitive population count by 2025.
The Chairman of the Population Commission explained that the census budget is still being finalized, as plans are underway to include a biometric component in the process. “We are working to incorporate the biometric model into this year’s budget and plan a test run before meeting with the President. The President prefers a biometric approach for the census, moving away from the traditional method,” he stated.
