Senator Orji Kalu, who represents Abia North, has shared that Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure in the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement, threatened him due to his lack of support for the Biafra cause.
In an interview with Arise Television on Monday, Kalu explained that Ekpa made several calls to him, issuing threats over his stance on Biafra, but he chose to disregard them.
“Simon Ekpa kept calling and threatening me for not backing Biafra, but I decided to leave him with his own conscience,” Kalu stated.
The senator also emphasized the need for intelligence-driven strategies to tackle crime, urging law enforcement agencies to take preventive action.
“I am very committed to ensuring the safety of the people I represent, and I am willing to take any necessary steps to protect their lives and property,” he added.
Kalu further called on South-East governors to take a strong stand against criminal activity.
“Leadership requires firmness in condemning crime, and I have worked to eliminate it. No governor should tolerate any form of criminal activity within their jurisdiction; it simply shouldn’t be allowed.”
These statements from Kalu come shortly after the news that Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa on November 21. The pro-Biafra activist was detained by the Päijät-Häme district court for allegedly promoting terrorism through social media.
The court has scheduled May 2025 for formal charges to be filed against Ekpa.
