In a video shared on Symfoni TV, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, recounted an incident in which a minister refused to hire her for a position due to her appearance, claiming that her attractiveness would distract him from his duties.
Akpoti expressed surprise at the minister’s bluntness, as he openly admitted that he could not maintain a professional relationship with her.
Though she appreciated the minister’s honesty, Akpoti also highlighted her discomfort with his objectifying remarks. The incident sheds light on the ongoing issue of gender bias and the sexualization of women in professional settings, emphasizing the need for societal change.
Recalling the event, Akpoti stated, “Many years ago, after working for five years at Brass LNG, I sent out my CV to several influential individuals. One particular minister told me, ‘Natasha, you’re intelligent and would be an asset, but I can’t have you in my office because you would be a distraction.’ When I asked what he meant, he said, ‘I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about having you.’ Although I found it strange that he even admitted to such thoughts, I appreciated his honesty.”
