Civil rights activist and former senator Shehu Sani has called on Nigerians and all levels of government to honor the country’s freedom fighters who stood in defense of the nation against colonial rule.
Speaking to reporters on Monday during a visit to the tombs of six deposed Emirs in Lokoja, Sani paid tribute to these leaders who resisted British colonialists. Accompanied by Comrade Suleiman Ahmed, he highlighted the sacrifices made by these Emirs, including the late Emir of Kano, Mallam Aliyu Abdullahi (Maisango), who died in 1903.
Sani stated, “Today, I am visiting the tombs of Northern Nigerian Emirs who were deposed by British colonialists and exiled to Lokoja, where they eventually died. Among them is the late Emir of Kano, Mallam Aliyu Abdullahi (Maisango).
“We must recognize and honor the freedom fighters who defended our nation. These Emirs stood firm against colonial oppression and made immense sacrifices to protect our land and people. As a Pan-Africanist and advocate for justice, I see it as crucial to appreciate and remember their contributions.”
The former senator emphasized the importance of reflecting on history to inspire future generations, adding, “As we move forward as a country, we must also look back to appreciate those who fought and sacrificed for our freedom. These leaders were deposed not by their people but by colonialists who sought to enslave our nation and exploit its resources. We owe them a great debt of gratitude.”
During the visit, Sani was guided by the Etsu Lokoja, Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, and other community leaders, who lauded the senator’s efforts to honor the deposed Emirs.
Etsu Lokoja remarked, “The visit by Senator Shehu Sani and his colleague, Comrade Suleiman Ahmed, is a significant and commendable gesture. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by these leaders who stood for their people. Leadership is about defending one’s community, and these Emirs exemplified that ideal.”
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District from 2015 to 2019, reiterated his dedication to celebrating Nigeria’s freedom fighters, urging others to join in preserving their legacy.
