Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday highlighted the potential of Nigeria’s carnival industry to drive economic growth, foster national unity, and empower youth. Speaking with representatives from the Abuja International Carnival at the Presidential Villa, Shettima emphasized the value of tapping into the $5 billion global carnival market, positioning Nigeria to become a key player in the industry.
Shettima stressed that the carnival sector could support Nigeria’s economic growth and showcase its cultural heritage. Citing the success of events like the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, which attracts over 200 million visitors annually, and Nigeria’s own Calabar Carnival, he urged the Abuja International Carnival team to expedite plans for the event’s revival.
“The global carnival market, valued at $5 billion, has significant potential for us. Beyond promoting our cultural diversity, it can bolster our economic development, empower youth, and strengthen national unity,” he said.
The Vice President further noted the government’s commitment to supporting youth initiatives in the creative industry, especially through the $618 million Digital and Creative Enterprises Project, which aims to strengthen digital and cultural ventures, including carnival initiatives.
Kehinde Adegbite, CEO of the Abuja International Carnival, expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s support and shared ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy to revitalize the carnival.
